‘An Inspiration to All’

Posted

To the Editor:

I am an inmate at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. I was reading the March 20 issue of Catholic New York when I came upon the Letters to the Editor section. One letter caught my eye. It concerned the recent article about the Gladhatters.

I crochet baby items. The five-piece sets I make consist of a hat, booties, mittens, a bib and a blanket. About four months ago, I also began crocheting baby sweaters. When I make the sweaters, I usually make booties to go along with them. My most recent set consisted of the above-mentioned items as well as a sweater. I send everything I make to the nursery here at the facility.

For me, crocheting began as a hobby many years ago. When I came to prison seven years ago, my hobby became a passion. The items are well received by the moms here in the nursery. They are grateful to get something made for them specifically. This is what keeps me doing what I do.

When I go home from here, I plan to continue making baby items. While I plan to sell some, I also plan to donate some to a local hospital in my hometown.

I would also like to thank you for spotlighting the Gladhatters. Please keep introducing us to groups like them as they are truly an inspiration to all of us.
