Bishop Byrne, a Hayes Man, Celebrates Mass at Alma Mater

Posted

Forty-five years ago, a young Peter Byrne walked the halls of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx as a student. When he returned on Sept. 10, he did so as a newly ordained Auxiliary Bishop and episcopal vicar of Dutchess, Putnam and Northern Westchester.

Greeted outside by student representatives, the genial bishop was taken through the doors of his alma mater and through the hallways to the auditorium to celebrate the opening Mass of the school year. Along with current Hayesmen, as the students of the school are called, were other members of the class of 1969 who came to proudly celebrate with their noted classmate, who was ordained a bishop on Aug. 4.

During the event, Student Council members were inducted into the society. Perhaps some things had changed since Bishop Byrne was a student at Hayes, but all in all, most things remained the same, especially the school spirit of the young men there.
