Black History Month Mass Set at Cathedral

The annual Archdiocesan Black History Month Mass and Celebration of the National Day of Prayer for the African American and African Family will take place at St. Patrick's Cathedral Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. Cardinal Dolan will be the principal celebrant and homilist.

The cardinal will be joined by Bishop Joseph Osei-Bonsu, president of the Ghana Conference of Catholic Bishops and Bishop of Konongo-Mampong, Ghana, as well as Auxiliary Bishop John O'Hara; Father James E. Goode, O.F.M., founder of the National Day of Prayer; and many other priests of the archdiocese, all of whom will serve as concelebrants.

A combined choir from the various parishes, schools and communities of the archdiocese, under the direction of M. Roger Holland II, liturgical music consultant to the archdiocesan Office of Black Ministry, and Mark Howell, director of music at St. Charles Borromeo parish in Harlem, will lead the music.

On Saturday, Jan. 31, there will be an Interfaith March and Prayer Service to "End Violent Loss in Our Community. Sponsored by the Lazarus Project of St. Charles Borromeo Church/Resurrection Chapel, the march through Harlem will begin at 9 a.m. from two locations in Harlem, St. Joseph of the Holy Family on West 125th Street and Resurrection Chapel on West 151st Street. Participants will march towards St. Charles Borromeo Church, 211 W. 141st St., where the prayer will continue indoors at 1 p.m. Lunch will be served to participants.
