CYO athletes from the archdiocese brought home 14 medals from the AAU Track and Field Club Championships in Orlando, Fla., July 8-14.

Josh Johnson of St. Lucy’s parish in the Bronx won bronze medals in the javelin and discus to qualify for the Junior Olympics, which will be held in Detroit, Mich., July 29-Aug. 3. The brother and sister team of Ming and Caroline Davis, of Holy Family parish in New Rochelle, both qualified for the Junior Olympics in the javelin. Anya Diones of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, White Plains, captured the silver in the javelin. Christian Attardi, St. Clare’s, Staten Island, took silver in the turbo javelin.

“The CYO is very proud of our athletes. Competing against track and field programs that train and compete year-round, Team CYO NY performed well against the nationally established programs,” said Seth Peloso, director of CYO operations for New York City.

Thirteen CYO athletes won a total of 14 medals at the meet. Medals are awarded to the top eight finishers in each event, with medalists also securing a potential spot at the Junior Olympics. Going to Detroit are Ming and Caroline Davis; Josh Johnson; Juliana Guthrie, Blessed Sacrament, Staten Island; Teesa Williams, SS. Peter and Paul, Staten Island; and Nicholas Yee, St. Lucy’s, the Bronx.

Other medalists were: Ashley Baggs, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island; Riley Brooks, Epiphany, Manhattan; Rachel Edmonds, St. Adalbert’s, Staten Island; Janine Gayanelo, Immaculate Heart of Mary, White Plains, and Elizabeth Garcia, now of St. John’s, Bergenfield, N.J.
