Patterson Scholarships at Manhattan College

Best-selling author James Patterson, Class of 1969, has established 16 scholarships at Manhattan College in the Bronx. The $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to 16 seniors and juniors beginning in the fall. The students will be selected based on merit, need and involvement in activities related to the college’s mission.

“My hope is that our program will help motivate and stimulate potential leaders at the college who will go on to do great things in their communities,” Patterson said in a statement.

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell, president of Manhattan College, said, “The students who will be eligible for this generous assistance are our ‘emerging stars.’ They work in student government, organize and lead the Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience (L.O.V.E.) service trips, tutor in the local schools, play varsity athletics or write for the newspaper and the literary magazine, while also excelling in classes.”

Patterson is the author of 76 best-selling fiction titles, including the detective series Alex Cross.

St. John’s University Teams With CRS

St. John’s University and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) recently signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on the Scholars in Global Solidarity program.

The program fosters the exchange of expertise between faculty and technical experts who lead CRS’ overseas humanitarian work. Faculty members, along with students, will work to advance the efforts of CRS in vulnerable communities around the world.

St. John’s is the third Catholic university to team with CRS. The University of San Francisco and Dayton University are the others.

Sister Margaret John Kelly, D.C., executive director of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society at St. John’s, said in a statement, “By uniting the academic sector with the service-provider world, mutual benefits will occur so that service to those in need will be enriched, which is our shared purpose.”
