Cathedral Mass Set For New Filipino Saint

St. Patrick’s Cathedral will be the site of a Mass of thanksgiving in honor of the canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod, who will become the second saint from the Philippines. The Mass will be offered on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. with Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the apostolic nuncio to Haiti, as the principal celebrant and homilist. The archbishop is a native of the Philippines.

Blessed Pedro Calungsod was only 14 years old when he accompanied several Jesuits to the Marianas Islands missions as a catechist. He became known for his charity as well as his devotion to the Eucharist and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1672, after four years of successfully sharing the Gospel, he and one of the priests were martyred while serving on Guam. He will be canonized at the Vatican by Pope Benedict XVI on World Mission Sunday, Oct. 21.
