Catholic Role Model

Posted

Thank you to Christina Capecchi for reminding us of an oft forgotten historical figure who is truly a role model for today (CNY, Feb. 19).

Irena Sendler was not a passive Catholic. She was knowledgeable about her faith and strong in character, and this enabled her to stand courageously against one of the most brutal war machines in recent history. She showed us that Christians cannot face—and win against—the evils of the world unless we are clear about our beliefs and living them every day, in every part of our lives.

Our Catholic faith should give us bravery and courage in the face of any evil that threatens us, whether it is a “casual” anti-Catholic comment at a party or the brutal murders of Christians in the Middle East. It may be hard, and it may feel at times like we are fighting a losing battle. But we can prevail. It is in times of great adversity that saints are made, and Irena Sendler, like so many other lay Catholic saints and heroes, has shown us that “through Him, all things are possible.”
