Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, Archbishop for the U.S. Military Services, will celebrate a Memorial Mass for Father Vincent R. Capodanno, M.M., a U.S. Navy Chaplain and Vietnam War hero, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, a day before the 48th anniversary of his death on a battlefield in Vietnam.

The Mass will be offered in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Ave. Northeast, Washington, D.C. It is open to the public and will be broadcast live on EWTN across North America.

Father Capodanno, a native of Staten Island whose cause for canonization was opened in 2006, was a Catholic military chaplain and U.S. Navy lieutenant who was killed in Vietnam on Sept. 4, 1967 as he gave physical and spiritual assistance to wounded and dying U.S. Marines during battle with the North Vietnamese Army. The Maryknoll priest posthumously received the Medal of Honor.
