The Archdiocese of New York released the following statement on Easter Sunday, April 8, to announce Father Felix Varela has been declared Venerable.
The Archdiocese of New York rejoices at the news that the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has declared Father Felix Varela Venerable, the first and a significant step on the road to possible eventual beatitude and canonization.
On March 14, 2012, the Congregation affirmed that Servant of God Father Varela (1788-1853) lived heroically the theological and cardinal virtues. After being declared Venerable, the next steps toward sainthood require one miracle to be declared Blessed, and another to be canonized a Saint.
Father Varela, born in Cuba and considered an apostle to immigrants, especially the Irish, in New York City, was vicar general of the Diocese of New York, founder of several newspapers, and a passionate defender and champion of the faith.
