‘God and Country’

To the Editor:

I would like to commend Catholic New York and Ron Lajoie for two outstanding articles that profiled the presence of the University of Notre Dame within our New York Archdiocese. Lajoie’s article on Ed Petrazzolo, a World War II veteran of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, and a member of the University of Notre Dame Alumni Club of Staten Island, highlighted Notre Dame’s commitment to God and country. The remarks by Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly, concerning Ed Petrazzolo, were a tribute to an outstanding Catholic layman and his service to our country and his commitment to the community on Staten Island and the church of the Archdiocese of New York.

Another tribute to a Notre Dame man was the article on David Phelps, the New York Yankees pitcher. It was inspiring to read of Phelps’ commitment to his Catholic faith and how he shared that commitment with the young people he spoke to at Epiphany parish in Manhattan. Both Ed and David reflect great credit on Our Lady’s University and her presence within the Archdiocese of New York.
