‘Heroic’ Example’

Posted

To the Editor:

Thank you for your Editor’s Report in the Feb. 5 issue. Don’t you think there is a reason why Cardinal Dolan and Pope Francis, among the thousands of other clerics and lay volunteers, come to our prisons? They don’t misunderstand who prisoners really are, they don’t believe in the myths. It’s quite simple, they are human and our future neighbors; they are our sons and daughters.

That’s why it was so inspiring to see Cardinal Dolan there along with the faculty of Bard College. I don’t have the statistics but they are very clear. Education is the best tool at fighting recidivism. Many people may shout that it’s an injustice to fund college tuition for inmates, or even provide education to inmates. I believe that argument is an injustice itself and goes against our Church’s own teachings that go all the way back to Christ. The inmates, no rather those gentleman, are heroic, but Cardinal Dolan, you too are heroic for setting an example for the rest of the Archdiocese. Thank you and God bless.
