High Jumper From Yonkers School Earns Medal at Junior Olympics

The Notre Dame Track Club of Sacred Heart Grade School, Yonkers, competed at the National Junior Olympic Championships in Houston, July 22-27.

Miguel Negrete, a sixth-grader, won a medal in the pentathlon and high jump. His medal in the high jump was particularly noteworthy because the 4-foot, 8-inch dynamo cleared the bar at over 5’2”.

The Notre Dame Club of Sacred Heart took seven athletes to the meet, which attracted 8,000 top athletes from across the country. Besides Negrete, the Sacred Heart contingent consisted of: Jessica Manzueta, third grade, shot put and javelin; Prizila Negrete, third grade, shot put and javelin; Deja Mitchell, fifth grade, high jump; Alexandra Tabora, sixth grade, discus; Alexis Velez, sixth grade, shot put and discus; Christian Rincon, sixth grade, 3,000 meters.
