His Good Lives On

Posted

John Woods’ column about Msgr. James Dorney was extremely touching and the stories continue about what a great priest he was. I have to share what I’m sure he would have never expected might be made public. The day after he died a letter arrived at the Good Counsel office. He was always a strong supporter of Good Counsel homes for mothers and babies and attended nearly every single Communion breakfast or lunch we’ve had on Staten Island for the past 23 years. His ready smile and strong words were always a joy and encouragement to the hundreds who would attend.

The letter which arrived began, “I’m sorry I won’t be able to make the lunch this year...” Inside was a significant donation and one of his personal checks. It very well may have been the last letter, perhaps the last check, he ever wrote. His support for life from the moment of conception was unwavering. His testament and reward will be for all the mothers and babies he helped not only at Good Counsel, but in the numerous ways he directly assisted and stood up to build the Culture of Life. God bless you greatly, Msgr. Dorney.
