Honoring Marriage

Posted

To the Editor:

I read with interest the Feb. 19 issue of Catholic New York, specifically Beth Griffin’s story on the World Marriage Day celebration in Highland Mills. I noted the list of longest-married couples in the Archdiocese of New York and wondered how you compile these lists, since my parents, Connie and Daniel Russo will be married 75 years this Sept. 15. We are all parishioners of St. Andrew’s Church.  My parents were married Sept. 15, 1940 at Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Mott Street in Manhattan.

While my parents have been unable to attend any formal ceremony at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, they did do so on their 50th wedding anniversary, when Cardinal O’Connor presided over the festivities.

Editor’s Note: World Marriage Day is an annual celebration sponsored by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter movement. One of its components is a contest to honor the longest-married couples in the archdiocese. The Family Life/Respect Life Office coordinates that contest, including the release of advance publicity materials in Catholic New York. CNY reports a list of the longest-married couples in conjunction with our reporting of the day itself.
