Joy’s Source

Posted

To the Editor:

I’m not an alcoholic, but one who scrupulously adheres to drinking no more than two drinks (red wines) a day, with normally a day off in between. That being stated, I thought that maybe, just maybe, Christina Capecchi’s article, “Drinking With the Saints, Reclaiming Catholic Merriment,” (CNY, July 9) might be misconstrued.

Too, I have cousins who are Baptists, and I’d have to think twice about sending this article to them. While I myself liked the article, I think Christina Capecchi might want to do, say, a Part Two for non-drinkers. While I’m no expert and can’t write for tee-totalers and/or arrested alcoholics—although I have both in my family—I think you might want to clarify even further the idea about which she wrote equating the Christian life of joy with, well, drinking.

We need to get our Christian joy solely from God the Father, His Son Jesus, and/or—although she was not divine—His mother Mary, and not from alcohol, drugs or “artificial substances”, for want of better terminology.
