Lack of Coverage

Posted

To the Editor:

On July 31/Aug. 1, a historic event took place in the Archdiocese of New York as many parishes were merged and several church buildings were closed. In the issue of Catholic New York, which followed this date, Aug. 6, there was not a news article recording any of the events surrounding this dramatic action.

While your column spoke to it, I think such a significant change in the structure of the Archdiocese deserved news coverage. Why did this not occur?

Editor’s Note: In addition to the Editor’s Report, the Aug. 6 issue also featured a front-page report that detailed the Mass welcoming the Ghanaian community to St. Luke’s parish in the Bronx, which was celebrated the same weekend as the mergers took effect. Before the addition of the Ghanaians at St. Luke’s, as the story detailed, that parish “had been earmarked for merger with nearby St. Jerome’s parish as part of the Making All Things New initiative.”

CNY had already done extensive reporting when the announcements of the parish mergers were first made, beginning last November and then in May. We’ve also continued to follow the issue with follow-up reports, news features and columns as developments occur.
