Local Catholic Educators on List of Honorees

The Irish Voice newspaper, based in Manhattan, honored 100 Irish-Americans last month in its third annual Irish Education 100 special supplement. The list of educators from throughout the country includes more than a dozen at Catholic colleges in the archdiocese, as well as local secular institutions.

Among the honorees are Father Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham University, and Father Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., president emeritus; Father Kevin Mackin, O.F.M., president of Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh; Sister Mary Eileen O’Brien, O.P., president of Dominican College in Orangeburg; Brennan O’Donnell, president of Manhattan College, the Bronx; and Father Donald J. Harrington, C.M., president of St. John’s University in Queens, which has campuses in the archdiocese.

Also from Fordham University, Father Robert R. Grimes, S.J., dean of Fordham College at Lincoln Center; John P. Harrington, professor of English and dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; and two trustees, Michael Cosgrove, president of Mutual Funds and Global Investment Programs for GE Asset Management in Stamford, Conn., and Mark H. Tuohey III, a partner at Brown Rudnick, Washington, D.C.

Other honorees are Sister Kathleen Sullivan, O.P., chancellor for external affairs at Dominican College; and, from the College of Mount St. Vincent in the Bronx, Joseph M. Skelly, professor of history, and Mary Ellen Sullivan, assistant professor and chairperson of the Department of Teacher Education.

Also honored was Msgr. Richard M. Liddy, professor of Catholic thought and culture and director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.

Honorees from local secular institutions are: John Lahey, president of Quinnipiac University; John Sexton, president of New York University; Robert A. Scott, president of Adelphi University;

James McCarthy, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Baruch College of the City University of New York; Marijo Russell O’Grady, dean for students, Pace University, Manhattan; and Thomas Ihde, associate professor of Irish language and literature at Lehman College, CUNY.
