A Memorial Mass for Father Vincent R. Capodanno, M.M., a Staten Island native, will be offered at the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Father Capodanno, a military chaplain and U.S. Navy lieutenant, was killed during a battle between U.S. Marines and North Vietnamese in Vietnam on Sept. 4, 1967, while anointing wounded and dying Marines. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor.

The Catholic Church declared Father Capodanno a Servant of God in 2006, opening his cause for canonization. The Mass is open to the public.
