Passion for Weaving at Sacred Heart

Posted

With loving hands, volunteers of all skill levels join together to create palm crosses, bouquets and other designs for parishioners at Sacred Heart in Newburgh to purchase on Palm Sunday. The palms represent those scattered below Jesus and waved over him as he entered Jerusalem.

The Gospel of John says, “The next day the large crowd that had come to the Passover Feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took out branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Praise God! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord! God bless the King of Israel’” (Jn 12:13).

In ancient Greece and Rome, palm fronds symbolized triumph.

With simple folds, twists and ties, the group at Sacred Heart works together designing the palm fronds. Situated at a long table perfect for laying out all the necessary elements, they make the crosses and package them for sale on Palm Sunday. Sister Ana Sasso, F.M.I., and parishioner Anthony Bilello coordinate the project.
