Resistant to Reform

Posted

The effusive encomium of Mother Angelica in a letter in Catholic New York’s April 14 issue should not stand without rebuttal. The letter’s author lauds Mother Angelica for not “being taken in by the liberal Church.” I simply would point out that all of us, liberal and traditionalist, are “The Church.”

Her resistance to Church reform at times seemed unnecessarily harsh—especially when she used her position to denigrate sincere bishops, priests and lay people who tried to implement the necessary work of the Second Vatican Council.

Among those reforms is something called aggiornamento—a key word used by the bishops at the Council for open-mindedness in bringing the Church up to date.
