Respect Life Month Observances Throughout the Archdiocese

The Church in the United States observes Respect Life Month throughout October. Below are some of the activities taking place in the Archdiocese:

THE BRONX

There will be an “Entering Canaan” Day of Prayer and Healing for Women who suffered the loss of a child through abortion, Saturday, Oct. 24, 9:30-5 p.m. For location and to register: Sisters of Life  (866) 575-0075 or hopeandhealing@sistersoflife.org. There will be an “Entering Canaan” Day of Prayer and Healing for Men Saturday, Oct. 17, co-sponsored by Lumina and the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. St. Benedict’s: A Respect Life Table will be set up Saturday, Oct. 3 and throughout October in the church vestibule with Respect Life information. The parish’s Respect Life Ministry will answer questions and educate parishioners on life issues after all Masses during Respect Life Information Weekend Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 10-11. A Spiritual Adoption Birthday Celebration will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the end of the prayer program. Parishioners can donate items for mothers and children served by the Sisters of Life. 

DUTCHESS COUNTY

St. Columba’s, Hopewell Junction: There will be an informational table with displays and handouts about life at the Respect Life Ministry Fair, Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 3-4. A Baby Bottle campaign to collect bottles will be held Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 3-4 after Masses to benefit local pregnancy centers. There will be a Tri-Parish Respect Life Society meeting on Monday, Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m. following the 7 p.m. Rosary and every second Monday of the month. There will be a Dedicated Prayer for Life Thursday, Oct. 22, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. in the convent building. A large cross will be carried in the “Jericho March,” a prayerful witness at Planned Parenthood that includes walking seven times around the block of the Poughkeepsie Planned Parenthood, Saturday, Oct. 24, 10 a.m.-noon. The fourth annual Spiritual Adoption Program will begin in October. St. Denis/St. Columba School will spiritually adopt and pray for a baby daily.  Posters will be hung in the hallway showing each stage of a baby’s development.

St. Mary’s, Wappingers Falls:  There will be a Baby Bottle Campaign to collect bottles, Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 24-25 at all Masses for the benefit of Good Counsel Homes. 

MANHATTAN

St. Brigid-St. Emeric’s: A Mass for Families will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 2, 9 a.m. The Nocturnal Adoration Society will hold Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Friday, Oct. 2, 7-10 p.m. with the offering of a 10 p.m. Mass in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for sins against life. There will be a collection for women and children served by the Sisters of Life throughout the month, which will be offered at Masses Oct. 24 and 25. There will be Cenacles of Life every Tuesday at 6 p.m. There will be a Rosary for Life before Mass on weekdays and before the 10 a.m. Mass on Sundays.

ORANGE COUNTY

The Orange County Right to Life 42nd Annual Banquet will be held at Kuhl’s Highland House, 12 Highland Ave., Middletown on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2-6 p.m. Guest speaker will be Bobby Schindler, executive director of the Terri Schiavo Life and Hope Network. Sacred Heart, Monroe: The parish will display 59 crosses on the front lawn that symbolize the 59 million babies aborted since the Roe vs. Wade decision in 1973. There will be a Rosary for Life, Saturday, Oct. 10, on the front lawn after the 9 a.m. Mass. A Prayer Vigil will be held each Wednesday through Oct. 28, 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in front of the abortion clinic on Rt. 208 in Blooming Grove. Immaculate Conception/St. Mary, Port Jervis: The parish’s Spiritual Adoption Program begins Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 3-4. 

PUTNAM COUNTY 

St. John the Evangelist, Mahopac:  Cenacles of Life will be held Thursday evenings from 7-8 p.m. before the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction. The parish’s 11th Annual Baby Bottle Campaign will be held on the weekends of Oct. 3-4 and Oct 24-25, with proceeds going to Emmanuel House International pregnancy center and Touching Tiny Lives of Lesoth. Africa, a ministry helping babies and young children with AIDS. Pro-life literature and bumper stickers will be available in the narthex.

ROCKLAND COUNTY

St. Joseph’s, Spring Valley: There will be a Spanish Evening of Prayerful Remembrance and Intercession on Saturday, Oct. 17, 6:15-9:15 p.m. The day will include Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and the sacrament of Reconciliation. Information: Sidia Cortes at (845) 561-2199.

STATEN ISLAND 

St. Joseph-Immaculate Conception-St. Mary, Rosebank:  Members of St. Joseph’s Confraternity of Christian Mothers will visit parishioners who are homebound or in nursing homes. A Christian Mothers meeting will be held, Wednesday, Oct. 1, 7:30 p.m. A Baby Shower for Good Counsel Homes  in Rosebank will take place at the group’s Oct. 7 meeting. Children’s clothing will be collected for the John Bruno Needy Mothers Support Program.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY 

Annunciation-Our Lady of Fatima, Scarsdale: The parish will hold Cenacles of Life, Wednesdays, following the 8 a.m. Mass. 

Assumption, Peekskill: A Spanish Pro-Life Formation Series will be offered Tuesday, Oct. 6; Friday, Oct 16; Thursday, Oct. 22; and Thursday, Oct. 29, 7-9 p.m. Information: Sidia Cortés, (845) 561-2199.

Blessed Sacrament, New Rochelle: A talk on “A Catholic Approach to Women’s Health Care” will be given on Friday, Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m. in the church by Dr. Anne Nolte, founder and medical director of the National Gianna Center for Women’s Health and Fertility. Enter from Shea Place or Centre Avenue. 

Holy Name of Jesus, New Rochelle: The Spiritual Adoption Program will begin the weekend of Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 3-4. The parish will collect new baby clothes and items for Providence House and Pregnancy Care Center in New Rochelle. The items can be dropped off in the church lobby Saturdays in October between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A Prayer Vigil at Planned Parenthood will be held each Thursday in October, 9 a.m.-10 a.m., at 247 North Ave., New Rochelle. “Fatima First Saturday Devotions for Life” will be offered after the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Saturdays, October through February.

St. Augustine’s, Ossining:  The Sanctuary Lamp will burn in memory of the unborn, mothers and fathers, grandparents and siblings throughout October. A Blessing of a Monument to the Unborn will take place Sunday, Oct. 25, at the noon Mass. Auxiliary Bishop Peter Byrne, episcopal vicar of Dutchess, Putnam and Northern Westchester, will bless and dedicate the monument.

St. John the Evangelist, White Plains: There will be a Rosary for pro-life intentions every Saturday at 5 p.m.
