Elementary Schools

 

The kindergarten class at St. Peter’s Regional School in Liberty is developing “a classroom in the woods” on school grounds. The class will use space to uncover the wonders of nature and build a play area using recycled materials. Partial funding for the “Classroom in the Woods” project came through a grant from Sullivan Renaissance Environmental Initiatives, which enabled the purchase of gardening supplies and materials.

 

The Notre Dame Club of the Mid-Hudson Valley sponsored three teachers with grants to attend the “Building School Achievement in the Digital Age” conference Oct. 25-27 at the University of Notre Dame. The teachers are: MaryAlison Makarczuk of St. Patrick’s School, Bedford; Susan Traudt, St. Joseph’s School, Kingston; and Michaeline Yurkovic, Holy Trinity School, Poughkeepsie. The Notre Dame Alumni Association organized the conference.

 

A new playground at the Nora Cronin Presentation Academy in Newburgh was dedicated Oct. 18. Sister Norma Carney, P.B.V.M., and Sister Mary O’Neill, P.B.V.M., both of the board of trustees, led the guests, students and staff in prayer. Other people who were present included: David Higgins of Lanc & Tully, who did the playground engineering design pro bono, and members of the school’s building committee. The Daly family was also thanked for their generous donation to the project.

 

St. Raymond Elementary School in the Bronx held its annual VIP reception Oct. 20 after the noon Mass at St. Raymond’s Church. The event began with a blessing of the school’s new rooftop play area. Honorees at the reception included: Lenny Caro, president of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce; Roseann Carotenuto, the archdiocese’s Northeast Bronx regional school superintendent; Florence M. Honohan, a longtime parishioner; James Honohan, son of Florence and member of the class of 1967; and Ray Negron, New York Yankees consultant and author.

 

High Schools

 

Anita Benn, a senior at Academy of Mount St. Ursula in the Bronx, is a Working Group on Girls (WGG) advocate this year. WGG is a coalition of more than 90 national and international organizations dedicated to the human rights of girls. She will learn more about the plight of girls throughout the world, attend events at the United Nations and plan action with leaders of other schools in response to the many issues that need attention. 

 

Declan Hoar, a senior at Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, was honored Nov. 3 as Yonkers Historical Society’s Volunteer of the Year. He assists at the society’s special events by toting, arranging, cleaning and selling flea market items, serving refreshments, greeting visitors and sharing his knowledge of history.

 

Students at Loyola School in Manhattan made a major donation to Ronald McDonald House last month. The students easily surpassed their goal of 300 items by collecting 800. They gathered toothbrushes, soap, shampoo and conditioner, and other personal items.

 

St. Raymond Academy for Girls in the Bronx observed World Food Day Oct. 16. The theme was “Youth Can Change the World.” Students viewed a video prepared by Cross Catholic Outreach. The school’s students joined some 50,000 others across the nation in collecting money for meals for children in underdeveloped countries.

 

The Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Anne 866, of Piermont presented monetary awards to students Dalis Anne Olson, granddaughter of member Barbara Olson; Matthew Pollack, grandson of member Edna Blose, and Kia Marie Nord, granddaughter of member Eileen Lawler. The awards are based on academic excellence and community service and given to relatives of members of Court St. Anne.
