High Schools

A teacher from St. Raymond High School for Boys in the Bronx attended a Jewish-Christian workshop hosted by the Anti-Defamation League. The Bettina and Erwin Pearl New York Bearing Witness Summer Institute was offered at St. Ignatius Retreat House in Manhasset, July 30-Aug. 1. Brother Richard Lalime, F.S.C., participated in the workshop, which included discussions on the Holocaust, anti-Semitism and contemporary issues of Catholic-Jewish relations. The purpose of the institute is to develop relationships and bring the lessons and themes discussed into the classroom.

The hockey team at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx raised $200 for Breast Cancer Awareness. A donation was made to the Young Survivors Coalition. The donation was made in honor or Rose Romano, mother of team goalie Steve Romano.

Students and staff of Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony for the James J. McCann Athletic Facility in June. The ceremony included a blessing by Auxiliary Bishop Dominick Lagonegro, episcopal vicar of the Northern Vicariates. A student from Regis High School in Manhattan won a gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad recently held at the University of Maryland. Chris Hillenbrand was the only U.S. team member to earn a gold medal. (Chris’ achievements were featured in CNY’s July 26 issue.)

Colleges

Sister Alice Gallin, O.S.U., was a recent recipient of the Distinguished Women of Achievement Award from The College of New Rochelle. Sister Alice, a graduate of the college, was given the award at the college’s recent 74th annual alumnae/i weekend. Making the presentation was Judith Huntington, president of the college…Sister Alice taught modern European history at the College of New Rochelle. She served as executive director of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, 1976-1992. Among other distinctions, she has published books and articles on Catholic education.

Manhattan College will host its third annual Cardinal Newman Lecture on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. in Hayden 100 on the main campus. Dr. John Churchill, secretary of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, America’s oldest collegiate honor society, will present “Saving America From Efficiency: The Primacy of Meaning in Higher Education.” The event is open to the public. The goal of the series is to reaffirm the significance of the liberal arts as the core of undergraduate education.
