Elementary Schools

St. Joseph’s School in Kingston collected 300 cans of soup to assist the St. James Food Pantry in Kingston. Sixth-grade teacher Karen Merker organized the “Souper Heroes” project.

This spring, the prekindergarten and kindergarten students of St. Paul School in Valley Cottage participated in the annual Trikeathon to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Dawn Fernandes, a teacher’s assistant at the school, organized the event. The children raised more than $4,000.

San Miguel Academy in Newburgh held its second annual walkathon last month. The students, along with friends, family and school benefactors walked across the Hudson River on the Newburgh Beacon Bridge. More than 150 people made the walk. Afterward, visitors were invited to tour the school. The walkathon was supported by local businesses in Newburgh, particularly Rhinebeck Bank, Pepsi-Cola of the Hudson Valley, Colandrea GMC and Screen Gems Inc.

Sixth-grader Jalen Ellis of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School on Staten Island was selected to attend the recent National Young Leaders State Conference in Boston, Mass. The conference sponsor is the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. Of the 250 participants, Jalen was selected to give the Scholar Speech at the commencement Ceremony. Principal Jeannine Roland said, “Each year we try to send a student representative to the conference. At 11 years old, Jalen is the youngest we ever sent. To be chosen to give the scholar speech out of all the other students speaks volumes to his leadership qualities.”

St. Francis of Assisi School in the Bronx raised $18,074 during their Relay Recess Campaign for the American Cancer Society.

St. Angela Merici School in the Bronx won the 2013 Thurgood Marshall Junior Mock Trial Competition. The program is named after the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice, who was a well-known figure in the history of civil rights, and the first black justice to serve on the Supreme Court. The competition was held for seventh- and eighth-grade students from Catholic and public schools in the Bronx. The students received a congratulatory note from Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, a note from the program president and were honored at an awards ceremony at a Yankees pre-game June 3.

High Schools

Theresa Fanelli, a sophomore at Good Counsel Academy in White Plains created a Math Olympiad for girls in Westchester County. Under the mentorship of Mary Ann Zeph Polistina, director of admissions, invitations were sent to seventh-grade girls in Catholic schools in the area. The project was part of her work in earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest rank in Girl Scouting. Theresa is a member of Troop 1272 in Shrub Oak. The following schools participated in the Math Olympiad: Sacred Heart, Yonkers, St. John the Baptist, Yonkers, St. Augustine’s, Ossining, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scarsdale, Villa Maria Academy, the Bronx, Our Lady of Victory, Mount Vernon, St. Eugene’s, Yonkers, Good Counsel Academy, White Plains, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Shrub Oak.

A student from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains won an award for leading role at the 15th annual Metropolitan High School Theater (Metro) awards June 3. Chris Guzman, a junior, won for playing Che in the school’s production of Evita.

Students from Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx worked on a college-level business case to win the first Stonehill Challenge, sponsored by Mount St. Michael alum Michael Mullen, class of 1976, who is an assistant professor of business at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., and students from Stonehill’s Mu Omega chapter of Beta Alpha PSi National Honor Society for accounting majors. Students in the honor society acted as consultants to the Mount St. Michael students by Skype video meetings. They were coached by Julie Androshick, the school’s director of development. The team won the challenge and a check for $500.

Students from Salesian High School in New Rochelle raised money for breast cancer research. A student’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer so Thomas Sierfring, class of 2013, organized the first Salesian High School 3 on 3 basketball tournament to end breast cancer. The students raised $1,600…The Salesian tennis team dedicated its entire season to Eileen Sabino, who died of pancreatic cancer. She was the mother of Coach Nick Sabino. The Salesian team won the championship.
