Maria Regina Is Westchester’s ‘Hunger Heroes’ Honoree

Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale has been selected as a recipient of the Food Bank for Westchester’s annual Hunger Heroes Award.

The school will be receiving the Donor Award for the strides it has made to end hunger in Westchester County through its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. The ceremony will take place Thursday, June 5, at the Tappan Hill Mansion in Tarrytown.

“We are thrilled to honor the students and staff at Maria Regina High School for all that they do during the holidays to lift a burden off of so many families’ shoulders,” said Ellen Lynch, executive director of the Food Bank for Westchester.

For more than 20 years, Maria Regina has provided thousands of Thanksgiving meals to St. Peter’s parish food pantry in Yonkers. Last year, more than 300 turkeys were donated to help feed needy families.

COLLEGES

Mount St. Mary Students Volunteer in Louisiana

Nearly a dozen students from Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh spent their spring break as volunteers in collaboration with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity.

“We were excited to show New Orleans what Mount St. Mary College has to offer and to welcome them into our family,” said Amanda Pfister, chapter president. She graduated in May with a degree in biology.

In the Carollton area of New Orleans, the students broke ground and worked on the foundation of a new home. They also pitched in with a neighborhood cleanup, and delivered food in the Upper Ninth Ward, mere blocks from where the levee broke during Hurricane Katrina.

The Mount group was led by Alexander LaPoint, assistant director of campus ministry, and Caitlin Houlihan, assistant director of student activities and Mount’s Habitat chapter adviser.

Student volunteers included: Megan Bekel, Catherine Terranova, Christina Cerutti, Brianna Kousin, Payge Yerkes, Amanda Pecorella, Christina Antico, Christopher Kelly, Nicole Bosi and Brigitte Leyva.

“I congratulate Dr. Lee on this most deserving honor, which underlines the importance of supporting and recognizing outstanding faculty members who dedicate their life’s work to our students elevating the College and contributing significantly to their disciplines,” said Iona President Joseph E. Manhattan College Now a CRS Global Campus

In 2007, Manhattan College began working with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States, to expand the college’s service opportunities, social awareness and educational offerings. CRS has recognized this work by recently selecting Manhattan College as a CRS Global Campus.

“Manhattan College’s partnership with CRS is an important means through which we as an institution put our values into action,” said Dr. Brennan O’Donnell, president of Manhattan College.

As a CRS Global Campus, Manhattan College will collaborate with CRS to advance the global social mission of the Catholic Church at the institutional, faculty and student levels. Through the partnership, the college is commited to CRS’ mission to assist the poor and respond to major emergencies, fight disease, and nurture peaceful and just societies around the world.
