St. Cecilia’s parish in East Harlem is inviting music aficionados to a benefit concert next month in Manhattan to bolster the church’s $1.36 million roof restoration fund-raising campaign. “Rebuilding St. Cecilia: Our Church, Our Home” is the theme of the parish’s three-year capital campaign to fund a complete, “historically appropriate roof restoration” to prevent further serious water damage to the church and rectory. Fittingly titled “Raising the Roof with Vickie Winans,” the concert features the nationally known Gospel singing star. Tickets are $60 for the main floor and $40 for the balcony, with open seating available in both areas. “This wonderful headliner concert is open to everyone — about 1,850 seats are available on the main floor and balcony — and we’re inviting all area Catholics and their guests to attend and enjoy the music and energy, and to help us in our very worthy cause,” said Father Peter A. Mushi, A.J., pastor of St. Cecilia’s parish. First Corinthian was selected for the concert because of its large size, offering almost three times as many seats as St. Cecilia’s, Father Mushi said. St. Cecilia’s has already won project grants from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, along with financial awards from the New York Landmarks Conservancy, the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone and a Robert W. Wilson Sacred Sites Challenge Grant, the pastor said. To activate the grants, St. Cecilia must raise nearly a quarter-million dollars on its own. “Our parishioners, organized into six volunteer committees plus many work groups, are in the first year of our three-year capital campaign,” Father Mushi said. “We’ve worked hard so far, organizing dinner dances, a street fair last summer, and many other activities. Now we’re developing events beyond our immediate neighborhood and appealing to major corporations and area businesses.” St. Cecilia’s Church is located at 120 E. 106th St. in New York.
