Staten Island Squads Tops in Cheerleading

Staten Island teams once again dominated at the Archdiocese’s CYO Cheerleading Competition March 21 at the College of Staten Island.

Our Lady Star of the Sea (OLSS) captured the Elementary (grades 7 and 8) Large Team category, 16 or more members. St. Clare’s took the Small Team Elementary title, 15 or fewer members. OLSS also won the Overall “Cheer” Award and captured the Biddy (kindergarten to grade 3) crown.

In the Debs competition (grades 4 to 6), St. Clare’s was the Large Teams winner while Holy Child took the Small Teams title. St. Clare’s also won the overall “Cheer” award.

The only non-Staten Island schools to place near the top of the standings were Our Lady of the Assumption from the Bronx, which finished third, and Immaculate Conception of Tuckahoe, which was fifth. Both competed in the Elementary Large Team division.

The overall cheer award, new this year, is presented to the team that scores the highest on the cheer score sheet only. The winner is judged against all teams in either the Debs or Elementary divisions, regardless of team size. “That’s for team that may not be strong in the tumbling or pyramids and that kind of stuff. It focuses on the cheer and we’re trying to build that up so that we get more teams back involved that are kind of intimidated by all that other stuff,” explained Seth Peloso, director of CYO operations.

The meet was divided into morning and afternoon sessions, and enthusiastic crowds filled the gym for both.
