For the first time in 35 years, CYO’s Archdiocesan Cheerleading Championships were held on Staten Island March 16. Staten Island teams didn’t really need the home court advantage at the College of Staten Island. As usual, they dominated the championships, with Staten Island schools sweeping every division.

Our Lady Star of the Sea took the Elementary division with 256.5 points, St. Clare captured Debs-Regular with 265.5 points, Holy Child won Debs-Novice with 248.5 points while St. Clare won the Biddy division with 243.5 points.

Some 450 cheerleaders took part in the competition, which was divided into two sessions. Some 2,000 spectators watched the girls in action.

“It was exciting to hold the Archdiocese Championships on Staten Island for the first time in the 58 year history of the competition.” said CYO director Seth Peloso. “Everyone involved, the parents, school administrators and especially the children, show their passion for the sport of Cheerleading.”
