Ten Priests Celebrate Golden Jubilees

Ten priests of the archdiocese are celebrating their 50th anniversary of priesthood this year. They are Auxiliary Bishop Josu Iriondo, Msgr. Joseph Ansaldi, Msgr. John Boehning, Msgr. John Brinn, Msgr. John Farley, Msgr. Thomas Shelley, Canon John Quinn, Father John Delaney, Father Joseph Irwin and Father Philip Sandstrom.

Nine of the jubilarians were ordained by Cardinal Spellman in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on June 2, 1962, after studying for the priesthood at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie. Bishop Iriondo was ordained for the Canons Regular of the Lateran on Dec. 22, 1962 in his native Spain and was later incardinated into the archdiocese.

Auxiliary Bishop Josu Iriondo, who was ordained an auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese by Cardinal Egan in 2001, has been pastor of St. Anthony of Padua parish in the Bronx since 2000 and, prior to that, served there as administrator for nine years. He has served as vicar for Hispanic Affairs since 1997 and episcopal vicar for the South Bronx Vicariate since 2002. In 1990 he was named director of the Hispanic Catholic Charismatic Center and director of the Charismatic Renewal movement. He was pastor of Our Saviour parish in the Bronx, 1978-1990, and also served as parochial vicar there for two years. He earlier served at Holy Rosary and St. Lucy’s, both in Manhattan; St. Joseph’s in Manhattan; and as chaplain to the Sisters, Servants of Mary. Ordained for the Canons Regular of the Lateran in the Basque region of Spain, where he was born, he was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1996 and named a monsignor in 1999.

Msgr. Joseph Ansaldi, who retired last year, served as principal of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, Staten Island, for 27 years, beginning in 1982. He first became a faculty member there in 1978 and capped his tenure by serving on the faculty from 2009 to 2011. Msgr. Ansaldi was regional vicar of Staten Island, 1991-1998. He also taught at Cardinal Hayes High School, the Bronx, 1963-1978. He earlier was a parochial vicar at St. Dominic’s, the Bronx, and a staff member at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin on Staten Island. He was named a monsignor in 1990.

Msgr. John Boehning has served as pastor of St. Thomas More parish, Manhattan, since 1994. He also was pastor of St. Anastasia, Harriman, 1982-1994. He served as a parochial vicar at the following parishes: St. Joseph’s, Yorkville, 1980-1982; St. Patrick’s, Staten Island, 1976-1980; and Holy Family, the Bronx, 1962-1976. He was named a monsignor in 2006.

Msgr. John Brinn, who retired last year, had served as pastor of St. Mary’s parish, Poughkeepsie, since 1994. He also was pastor of St. Martin de Porres, Poughkeepsie, 1983-1994, where he had earlier served as parochial vicar for 18 years. His first assignment was as a parochial vicar of St. Peter’s, Liberty. He was named a monsignor in 2006.

Msgr. John Farley, who retired last year, was pastor of St. Margaret of Cortona, the Bronx, 2000-2006, and St. Peter’s, Rosendale, 1987-1994. He was chaplain at Vassar Brothers Hospital, Poughkeepsie, 2009-2011, and a parochial vicar of St. Columba’s, Hopewell Junction, 2006-2009. He was on the faculty of Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, 1998-2000, and St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, 1994-1998. He was spiritual director of Cathedral College, Douglaston, 1983-1987, and associate director of Trinity Retreat, Larchmont, 1979-1983. He was a parochial vicar at St. Raymond’s, the Bronx, and St. Aloysius, Manhattan. He served in the archdiocesan Superintendent of Schools office, and was a faculty member at Cathedral Prep, Manhattan; Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, and Bishop DuBois High School, Manhattan.

He was named a monsignor in 1995.

Msgr. Thomas Shelley has been a professor of historical theology at Fordham University since 1996. He was a faculty member at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, 1986-1996. He also served as historian of the archdiocese, beginning in 1988. He also served as temporary administrator of Holy Trinity parish, Yonkers. He taught at Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx, 1969-1984, and Archbishop Stepinac High School, White Plains, 1964-1969. He earlier served at Our Lady of Lourdes parish, Manhattan, and St. Aloysius, Livingston Manor. He was named a monsignor in 1999.

Canon John Quinn, who retired last year, had been a speaker on behalf of the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging and for Cross International Catholic Outreach since 1997. He also was a hospital chaplain in Fort Lauderdale. He was invested as a canon in 1995. He served as pastor of St. Charles Borromeo, Gardiner, 1996-1997. He was a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, beginning in 1976, retiring with the rank of major. He served as parochial vicar of St. Thomas of Canterbury parish, Cornwall-on-Hudson; Holy Family, New Rochelle; Sacred Heart, Hartsdale; and Good Shepherd, Rhinebeck. He was chaplain at Elizabeth Seton College

Father John Delaney had served as assistant judicial vicar of the Metropolitan Tribunal from 1986 until his retirement in 2002. At the Tribunal, he served as pro-synodal judge, 1977-1986; defender of the bond, 1976-1977; and canonical consultant, 1968-1976. He served as temporary administrator of St. Joseph of the Holy Family parish, Harlem, 1971-1972, and was a parochial vicar of St. Paul’s, East Harlem, 1962-1968.

Father Joseph Irwin, a senior priest, has served as administrator for the past two years at Most Holy Trinity, Mamaroneck, where he had served as pastor since 1989. Previously, he served at St. Mary’s, Mount Vernon, where he was named parochial vicar in 1966, temporary administrator in 1977 and pastor later that year. He was a parochial vicar of St. Peter’s, Rosendale, 1962-1966, and St. John the Evangelist, Clove, in the summer following his ordination.

Father Philip Sandstrom, who retired last year, had served as director of liturgy at American College, Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium since 1988. He was administrator of St. Michael’s parish, Manhattan, in 1988. He was on the faculty of Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx, 1974-1985. He served as a parochial vicar of St. Mary and St. Andrew, Ellenville; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pelham Manor; St. Francis of Assisi, Mount Kisco; and Sacred Heart, Barrytown.
