‘Think Twice’

Posted

To the Editor:

In your Oct. 30 issue you printed a story in which Pope Francis called for the abolishment of the death penalty and life in prison. After reading the article I believe that the written quotations attributed to the pope were possibly taken out of context. How could anyone make such a blanket statement in regards to all of the crime prosecutions that are executed throughout different parts of the world?

The prison system here in the United States is the best in the world, even though nothing is perfect. In fact, inmates live in more comfort confined in U.S. prisons than many citizens who reside in poverty in this great nation of ours.

I am against the death penalty, but not life in prison. You must realize that you are not just punishing the perpetrator of a horrendous act, but you are making an example so others might think twice before perpetrating the same or a similar violent act upon another innocent victim.
