Though Finish Wasn’t Amazing, Cardinal Still Proud of Mets

On his Catholic Channel show on SiriusXM satellite radio, Cardinal Dolan today talked about the Kansas City Royals five-game win over the Mets in the World Series.

Back in March, Cardinal Dolan had predicted a Mets-Baltimore Orioles World Series, citing the strength of the Mets’ pitching rotation. “Being a hopeful, optimistic person, I’d like to think this might be the year that the Mets shine,” the cardinal said then.

While the Mets did not capture their third World Series title, the cardinal was eminently happy for the success they enjoyed this season.

“We’re proud of the Mets,” Cardinal Dolan said. “And I was able to go to the game on Saturday night. I think that’s what’s wrong with my voice. I was cheering for half the game and crying the other half. But we’re proud of them. And we look back over the five games and the mistakes and all but, boy, they got there and they played great baseball and brought this city together.”

The cardinal, who is originally from St. Louis and grew up a Cardinals fan, said he does have a spot in his heart for the team on the other side of Missouri.

“I’ve always been fond of the Royals, of course, because they are at the other end of Highway 70 in my home state of Missouri,” the cardinal noted. “If we couldn’t take it I’m kind of happy that the Royals did.”

Cardinal Dolan then welcomed to the show five-time All-Star Mike Sweeney, who played 13 seasons with the Royals. Sweeney, a devout Catholic, has developed Catholic baseball camps for young players across the country.
