Auxiliary Bishop Dennis Sullivan, vicar general, will celebrate the annual Simbang Gabi Mass.

Simbang Gabi or the Mass at Dawn is a Mexican, Spanish and Filipino custom of nine Masses dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, traditionally beginning on Dec. 16 and culminating on Christmas Eve. In the Philippines the Masses have been celebrated at dawn before workers go to work in the fields. It is considered a way of spiritually preparing for the Christmas season.

Father Joseph Marabe, director of the Filipino Apostolate, began the tradition of celebrating Simbang Gabi at the cathedral in 2007. The International Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be carried during the entrance procession.

Following Mass a dinner of traditional Filipino fare will be served in the cafeteria of Cathedral High School, 350 East 56th St.
