I don’t always agree with Cardinal Dolan but I totally agree with him on the idea of celebrating special occasions with greater moderation (CNY, April 16). I have discussed this issue with friends but I have never read anything about the value of simplicity in expressing joy. As a society we have become overly materialistic and we are sending the wrong message to children. Many people appear to be clueless as to the damage done by these over-the-top displays of wealth.
