Widespread Invitation

Posted

To the Editor:

As we approached the celebration of Easter this year, invitations to participate in a universal day of reconciliation at churches throughout the archdiocese were published in several daily newspapers (and in Catholic New York). As a person who grew up during the days when we were conditioned to enact our Easter “duty,” I was refreshed and encouraged by the widely publicized invitation to take actions, at a church of our choice during convenient hours to assure ourselves of being in a state of grace when receiving the Blessed Sacrament, especially during this blessed time of celebrating Christ’s Resurrection.

I am not aware of whether this effort extended beyond the Archdiocese of New York. I do believe it is an excellent concept and much needed in today’s world. Displaying this “welcome mat” out more than just once a year at Easter will likely bring more people “home” and closer to the significance of the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Editor’s Note: Reconciliation Monday was offered in parish churches in the Archdiocese of New York and in the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre. Another Reconciliation Monday is offered in archdiocesan parishes during the season of Advent.
