To the Editor:

Twenty years ago, Father Timothy M. Dolan gave the Archbishop Gerety Lecture at Seton Hall University. In it, the now-Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, quoted Benjamin Franklin, who insisted, “Congress…cannot and should not…intervene in the ecclesiastical affairs of…any religion.” 

More than 200 years later, we have a president who has made it clear that his government can and should intervene in the ecclesiastical affairs of any religion.  

Catholics across America are marking “A Fortnight for Freedom” from June 21 through the 4th of July. You don’t have to be Catholic to join us in prayer and fasting for religious freedom in our country. Call the local Catholic Church to learn if they are having a special program of prayer.
