Allegations Against Father Timone Found Credible and Substantiated

Father Donald Timone, a retired priest of the archdiocese, has been removed from priestly ministry after allegations of sexual abuse made against him have been found credible and substantiated by the archdiocesan Lay Review Board.

His removal is in keeping with the policy of the Archdiocese of New York, and the promises made by the Bishops of the United States in their Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.

Father Timone, 85, has not been permitted to function as a priest since December 2018.

An allegation of sexual abuse of a minor, made against Father Timone in 2002, was found unsubstantiated by the archdiocese’s Lay Review Board at that time.

The original complaint was brought to the archdiocese’s Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program. In the course of the investigation, new evidence came to light, resulting in compensation being paid.

After that finding, Cardinal Dolan asked the Lay Review Board to re-examine the case.
