ArchCare caregivers raised more than $8,000 to purchase 15 generators that were flown to Nuestra Senora del Carmen parish Dec. 10 for residents of Humacao, Puerto Rico.
Father John Anderson, ArchCare’s vice president of mission, blessed the generators in a ceremony at ArchCare at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in Manhattan Dec. 7.
Humacao, located on the east coast of Puerto Rico, is one of the areas still in darkness since Hurricane Maria hit the region Sept. 20. ArchCare is the continuing care community of the archdiocese.
“This is yet another shining example of how people in every corner of ArchCare come together to help others in times of need,’’ said Scott LaRue, the president and CEO of ArchCare. “As a ministry, our mission is to go where the needs are greatest where we can serve best. There are no borders when it comes to the compassion and resourcefulness of our more than 4,000 care members. Wherever there is need, ArchCare people are ready to rise up to meet it.”
The fund-raising began when ArchCare staffers at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Center sought to do something meaningful to assist those in need. Work quickly spread and donations began arriving from ArchCare facilities. It took some time to purchase the generators as there was a shortage on the east coast due to the intense hurricane season.
ArchCare cares for more than 8,000 people of all faiths through its home and community-based and residential care programs.
