Brother John Amedy Francis Martin, F.S.C

Brother John Amedy Francis Martin, F.S.C., who was a principal and director of schools in the archdiocese, died Oct. 12 at De La Salle Hall in Lincroft, N.J. He was 85.

He was principal of Sacred Heart School, Yonkers, 1982-1984, and was director of La Salle Academy, Manhattan, 1963 and 1981, and Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft. He served as an administrator at De La Salle Institute, Manhattan, 1956-1959. He also taught at the following schools in the 1940s: Manhattan Prep School; St. Nicholas of Tolentine, the Bronx; and St. Peter's, Staten Island.

He was provincial of the La Salle Provincialate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, 1972-1981, and was treasurer and assistant to the provincial, 1996-2006.

Born in New York City, he entered the Christian Brothers in 1940. He held a bachelor's degree from The Catholic University of America and a master's from Manhattan College, which also awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1981.

He is survived by a sister, Mary Martin.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 15 at De La Salle Hall. Burial was in St. Gabriel's Cemetery in Marlboro Township, N.J.
