Brother Martin Pius Burns, C.F.C., who held education and congregational posts for the Christian Brothers, died Dec. 19 at Bayberry Nursing Home in New Rochelle. He was 87. He was principal and community superior of Iona Grammar School, New Rochelle, 1969-1975, and principal of Cardinal Hayes High School annex at St. Helena’s, the Bronx, 1952-1955. He was a teacher at Power Memorial Academy, Manhattan, 1983-1984; All Hallows High School, the Bronx, 1951-1952; Cardinal Farley Military Academy, Rhinecliff, 1947-1951; and Iona Preparatory School, New Rochelle, 1940-1947. He also was a councilor of the New Rochelle-based North American Province of the Christian Brothers, 1960-1962. He was St. Gabriel’s Scholasticate superior and administrator in West Park, 1955-1956; and also served as superior and administrator of St. Gabriel’s Junior College, Lakewood, N.J., from 1956 to 1968. He also served in Christian Brothers’ schools in New Jersey. Born in Manhattan, he grew up in the Bronx and entered the Christian Brothers in 1937. He professed final vows in 1940. He held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fordham University. He is survived by a brother, James. A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 22 at Holy Family Church in New Rochelle, with burial in Christian Brothers Cemetery, West Park.
