Brother Roger Mellon, M.M., who served as a carpenter and a missioner to the Philippines, died Oct. 1 at St. Teresa's Residence in Ossining, where he had lived since July 2000. He was 82. In 1955 he was assigned to the Maryknoll Training Program at Ossining where he taught building construction and carpentry to the young brothers entering the society. He served in the Philippines in 1961 and returned to the United States the following year to work at the Maryknoll novitiate, then located in Hingham, Mass. In 1967, he returned to Maryknoll headquarters in Ossining where he worked until 1977, when he transferred to the Maryknoll residence in Los Altos, Calif. He began work at St. Teresa's Residence in 1986 and retired in 1992. Born in Philadelphia, he served with the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in Southeast Asia during World War II. He entered Maryknoll in 1953 and took his final oath in 1958. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Haag. A Funeral Mass was offered on Oct. 6 at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Chapel at the Maryknoll Society Center in Ossining. Burial was in Maryknoll Cemetery.
