Deacon Albert V. Welhous, who served for 26 years at SS. Philip and James parish in the Bronx, died March 18 at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. He was 76.

Auxiliary Bishop Gerald T. Walsh, rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary, celebrated a Funeral Mass March 25 at SS. Philip and James Church. The homilist was Father James E. Goode, O.F.M., pastoral director of Solid Ground Ministry, a Franciscan outreach to African-American families.

Msgr. Edward M. Barry, pastor of St. Barnabas parish in the Bronx, celebrated a Vigil Mass March 24 at SS. Philip and James. The homilist was Father Steven Masinde, A.J., pastor of SS. Philip and James.

Deacon Welhous taught industrial arts for the New York City Board of Education. He held a bachelor’s degree from New York University and a master’s from the City University of New York, both in education.

He was ordained a deacon in 1984 and had served at his parish since then.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances; two sons, Albert Jr. and Michael; a daughter, Janette; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, John.

Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
