Deacon Arnaldo Rodriguez

Deacon Arnaldo Rodriguez, who served as a permanent deacon in the archdiocese for 37 years, died July 1. He was 82.

Deacon Rodriguez served at Nativity, Manhattan, 1993-2014, and Our Lady of Scapular, Manhattan, 1977-1993.

At both parishes, Deacon Rodriguez participated in the sacramental and liturgical life of the parish, and served in hospital, nursing home and homebound ministries. He served on the pastoral staff of Cabrini Hospital, volunteered at Bellevue Hospital and worked with the homeless at Moravian Church, all in Manhattan.

Born in Puerto Rico, he was ordained by Cardinal Terence Cooke in 1977.

He was employed by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and stationed at Bellevue Hospital as an assistant systems analyst.

His wife, Gladys, and daughters, Janel, Jennifer and Erica, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated July 8 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Manhattan, with retired Auxiliary Bishop Gerald Walsh as celebrant. Burial was in St. Teresa of Avila Cemetery in Summit, N.J.
