Deacon Gabriel Liegey Jr.

Deacon Gabriel Liegey Jr., who served at St. James the Apostle parish in Carmel for two years, died Dec. 24 at Franklin County Rehab Center in St. Albans, Vt. He was 92.

Deacon Liegey was assigned to St. James the Apostle, 1998-2000, after being ordained by Cardinal O’Connor in 1998. At St. James, he performed baptisms and weddings, assisted at Mass, and visited the homebound and sick.

Deacon Liegey, who worked for General Motors, later served at parishes in Massachusetts and Vermont.

Born in Manhattan, he served in the U.S. Navy for two years before earning a bachelor’s degree in English from Fordham University, and a master’s in business and finance from NewYork University Graduate School of Business.

His children, Gabriel Liegey and Eileen Liegey, survive him as do his siblings, Sister Mary E. Liegey, S.C.; Sister Veronica Liegey, S.C.; Sister Christine Liegey, P.B.V.M.; Bernadette Liegey; Hilaire Liegey; Michael Liegey; Francis Liegey; and Gregory Liegey.

His wife, Mary, predeceased him. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 4 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, St. Albans. Burial will be held in the spring at St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfield, Vt.
