Deacon Vincent Piro

Deacon Vincent Piro, who served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Mount Vernon for more than a quarter of a century and was the oldest deacon in the archdiocese, died Dec. 29 at White Plains Hospital. He was 93.

Deacon Piro was ordained as a permanent deacon in 1977 and continued to actively serve at Our Lady of Mount Carmel until about two years ago, said Father Lawrence J. Quinn, the pastor.

“He was a very warm, gentle, kind and understanding man,” Father Quinn told CNY.

Deacon Piro was past president and moderator of the parish’s Holy Name Society and also was past grand knight of Knights of Columbus Council 410 in Mount Vernon.

Born in Mount Vernon, he worked for the Housing Authority of the City of Mount Vernon until his retirement in 1979. He was married to Katherine Gelardo, who predeceased him.

He is survived by two daughters, Theresa Bonser and Clare Ferris, and a son, James. He was also predeceased by his daughter Angela Smario.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 3 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in New Rochelle.
