Dean Hoge, who in 34 years on the faculty of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., became one of the country’s experts in the sociology of religion, died Sept. 13. He was 71.

A memorial service was held Sept. 27 at the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church in Takoma Park, Md

Mr. Hoge was an associate professor and professor in the Department of Sociology at Catholic University from 1974 until his recent retirement. From 1999 until 2004, he was director of the university’s Life Cycle Institute.

“It is difficult to imagine The Catholic University of America without Dean Hoge. His presence and remarkable scholarly work have been a fixture here for over three decades,” said Vincentian Father David M. O’Connell, president of Catholic University.

He noted that Hoge was associated with “some of the most significant national studies and research” conducted on topics such as trends in the U.S. Catholic Church; attitudes of Catholic clergy and Catholic youths toward the Church and religion; and the financing of religious organizations.—CNS
