The secular press has reported that, in the current political stalemate regarding the building of a wall on the border with Mexico, President Trump has referred to House Leader Pelosi’s Catholicism, specifically as an example of where a wall protects the Vatican.
I find those presidential references demeaning and reprehensible, as if the Vatican wall represents some kind of tenet of faith. The lack of commentary in the Catholic press about his comments leaves me disturbed as well.
As a sidebar, anyone with even the slightest knowledge of history knows full well that the Vatican wall neither completely surrounds the city-state nor has it ever served as a successful means of protection against assaults.
