Father Albert E. Caruana, S.J.

Father Albert E. Caruana, S.J., director of the Xavier Society for the Blind and a former teacher and administrator at Jesuit colleges, died Sept. 28 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. He was 66 and resided at the Xavier Jesuit Community on 16th Street in Manhattan. He was appointed to head the Xavier Society in 1995 and led its centennial celebration in 2000. Previously he was administrator of the Jesuit residence on the Fordham University campus, 1989 to 1995. He assisted in the university dean's office and the Jesuit rector's office, 1986 to 1989, and supervised the renovation of Ciszek Hall in the Bronx as a residence for young Jesuit priests in formation. He was administrator of the Jesuit faculty residence at Canisius College in Buffalo and served in campus ministry, 1980-1984. From 1977 to 1980 he taught sociology at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J., and previously he taught at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Born in Rochester, he entered the Jesuits at Bellarmine Novitiate in Plattsburgh in 1958 and professed vows in 1960. He studied philosophy at Shrub Oak and theology at Woodstock College, first in Maryland and then in Manhattan after it relocated here. He was ordained in Rochester in 1971. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 8 at St. Francis Xavier Church. Burial was in the Jesuit Cemetery at Auriesville.
