Father Barry McMahon, O.F.M. Cap.

Father Barry McMahon, O.F.M. Cap., a lawyer who became a Capuchin Franciscan friar, died Dec. 21 at Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J. He was 85.

   He held provincial posts for the Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary from 1973 until his retirement in 2002, serving as provincial auditor, adviser for legal and fiscal matters and business manager, while residing at Sacred Heart Friary, Yonkers.

   He was a parochial vicar at St. John the Baptist parish, Manhattan, 1963-1973, and in 1973 also served briefly on the staff of the friars’ “View” magazine.

   He served at a high school in Guam from 1960 to 1963.

   Born in Manhattan, he received a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University. He served in the U.S. Army, 1943-1946, and continued as economic adviser to the U.S. Army Military Government in Japan, 1946-1950.

   He then attended Cornell University School of Law in Ithaca, receiving his law degree in 1953. After two years as a postulant at Mary Immaculate Friary in Garrison, he entered the Capuchin Franciscan novitiate in 1955 and pronounced final vows in 1960. That same year, he was ordained to the priesthood.

   He is survived by a brother, Herbert.

   A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 28 at Sacred Heart Friary, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
