Father Charles Brozat, S.A., who served in Japan for many years, died on Oct. 13 in Ringwood, N.J. He was 88.

His first assignment was to the Franciscan Language School in Tokyo in 1957. His service to the missions in Japan as a pastor and school principal took him to the islands of Ikitsuki, Tsurumi and Kikuna, 1959-1977. He did pastoral work in Okinawa, 1977-1987, and then spent two years in Tsurumi and Yokohama.

In 1989, he returned to Graymoor for a sabbatical and then went back to Japan to serve as pastor of a parish in Yokohama until his retirement in 2011.

Born in Montclair, N.J., he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1949 and professed final vows in 1954.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1957.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Pacific Theater operations.

He held a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and theology from The Catholic University of America.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 19 in the Piux X Building Chapel at Graymoor. Burial was at the Friars’ Cemetery.
