Father Edward Datty, S.A., a former director of pastoral care at Bayley-Seton Hospital on Staten Island, died April 16 at St. Elizabeth Ann's Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center there. He was 85. He was chaplain and pastoral care director at Bayley-Seton from 1981 until he retired in 2003. Before that, he was chaplain at Marine Hospital on Staten Island for 14 years. In 1981, he received the Health Service Award from the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital on Staten Island, and in 1984 he received the Dr. Richard Bayley Humanitarian Award from Bayley-Seton. Earlier, he was assigned to the Atonement Friars' foundation in Japan from 1949 until returning to the United States in 1967. He did pastoral and hospital chaplaincy work there, including 12 years of service at the U.S. Army Hospital in Yokohama. Born in Philadelphia, he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement at Graymoor in 1937. He was ordained in 1949. A Funeral Mass was offered April 19 in the Friary Chapel at Graymoor, with burial in the friars' cemetery there.
